A Record-Breaking Feat in Roofing Innovation

The Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre, located in Petra Jaya, Kuching, stands as a proud architectural landmark and a symbol of Malaysian excellence. Once known as the Sarawak Aquatic Centre, it was renamed in honour of national diving icon Pandelela Rinong, who brought glory to the nation with her stellar performance at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

This prestigious project marked a major milestone for United G.I. (UGI) Products Sdn Bhd, featuring an 81 metre-long UNILOK® in COLORBOND® ULTRA MATT steel, installed in a single continuous length, without any laps. The record-breaking execution stands as one of the longest mobile site-forming applications ever carried out, showcasing the capabilities of advanced roofing expertise and technology. Designed by the acclaimed PDC Design Group, the aquatic centre was shortlisted in 2014 by the Malaysian Institute of Architects as one of the country’s most outstanding new buildings.

Inside, the centre features clear spans and tiered seating for 2,070 spectators, all supported by the extensive seamless steel roof

With a seating capacity of 2,070 spectators, the venue has hosted numerous high-profile events, including the 2017 SEA Games and the 2024 Malaysian Games (SUKMA). But beyond its accolades lies a technical marvel: the centre’s 81 metre-long one-piece steel is a rare engineering feat in Borneo, where standard steel roofing typically extends only up to 30 metre. Despite the challenge, UGI delivered with precision and innovation. The project also made history as UNILOK® became the first concealed fixed steel roofing system in East Malaysia to be SIRIM certified.

To complement the centre’s sleek, curvilinear design, UGI selected COLORBOND® ULTRA MATT steel, a product designed to meet both form and function. It incorporates BlueScope’s Thermatech® technology, which reduces heat absorption and minimises glare while delivering superior performance. Known for its proprietary paint system and exceptional corrosion protection, COLORBOND® steel is built to withstand intense sunlight, humidity, and the ever-changing tropical climate.
