Saint-Gobain Gyproc® for Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu
Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu, designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates in collaboration with Daniel Koh Architect, is located in the heart of the city of Kota Kinabalu is designed to be a new and local landmark that represents the culture and heritage of Sabah, offering the perfect blend of vibrant city life and serene natural surroundings. This 23-storey hotel consists of 222 guest rooms including suites that overlook idyllic islands in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. The construction phase of this current renowned hotel which included a product range by Saint-Gobain began in 2019 and concluded in October of 2022.
As part of this project, Gyproc® Glasroc® X was one of the key elements used in the external wall system of the hotel. The project site is situated in a tropical setting close to the sea. Glasroc® X is a high-performance board with a gypsum core containing special additives for moisture and mold resistance. Glasroc® X is a reinforced board with glass-mat on both surfaces and finished with a UV resistant coating, providing outstanding performance in humid environments. Its lightweight composition ensures ease of handling and installation, while its durability makes it particularly well-suited to challenging environments such as wet areas, high-humidity zones, and external applications. The use of Glasroc® X contributed to a robust, long-lasting façade system capable of withstanding demanding climatic conditions.
Other than external walls, standard gypsum plasterboards by Saint-Gobain — Gyproc® Baseline® and Gyproc® Topline® — have been used throughout the ceiling and wall lining systems of the hotel’s interior spaces. These boards are lightweight, easy to handle, and allow for quick installation, making them ideal for efficient construction timelines. While Gyproc® Baseline® is designed for both wall linings and ceilings, Gyproc® Topline® is specifically intended for ceiling use due to its even lighter weight, offering enhanced ease of installation overhead.
These Gyproc® boards provide a smooth, crack-resistant finish and are fire-rated, ensuring both aesthetic quality and safety. In addition, they are environmentally friendly, manufactured with sustainability in mind using recycled materials and low embodied carbon processes. Their eco-conscious design supports the hotel's commitment to greener building practices, contributing to improved indoor air quality and overall environmental performance. By incorporating these sustainable plasterboards, Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu not only enhances the comfort and safety of its guests but also reduces its ecological footprint, aligning with modern standards for responsible construction.

Designed by MinWee Architects, the former 1980s car showroom was transformed into a new office for a logistics company with minimal demolition. Most existing structures were retained, while new additions—mainly lightweight steel—were introduced for speed and cost efficiency. A steel mezzanine creates an open-plan office, and the old dealership rooms now house back-of-house functions. A new single-storey, container-inspired conference block fronts the site. Completed in nine months, the project relied on on-site decision-making and close client involvement, serving as valuable training for the young team.
