The Cara Hotel

Two stone reception counters echo the rugged surface of Mount Kinabalu’s granite cliffs, introducing a grounded focal point to the lobby

Located in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, The Cara Hotel is a 30-room hospitality project designed by Wowspace Design Studio through the adaptive reuse of a former commercial retail and office building. The renovation transforms approximately 1,500 square metres of interior space into a quiet luxury retreat defined by calm spatial experiences, a muted material palette and a restrained approach to design.

The design approach focuses on restraint and spatial calm, translating the atmosphere of Sabah’s landscapes into tactile materials and softened architectural forms. Rather than relying on literal cultural motifs or overt decorative gestures, the concept draws inspiration from Sabah’s natural environments as an abstract framework. The presence of Mount Kinabalu, the calm rhythm of coastal shorelines, the quiet depth of tropical rainforests and the shifting colours of Sabah’s sunsets are interpreted through textured surfaces, sculpted forms and carefully layered lighting. These references remain intentionally subtle, allowing the atmosphere of the landscape to be felt rather than directly represented.

A sculptural stone wall anchors the lobby beyond the entrance, its rugged surface referencing the granite cliffs of Mount Kinabalu

Public spaces are designed to feel intimate and composed rather than monumental. The arrival lobby introduces the project’s narrative through a sculptural stone wall referencing the rugged granite cliffs of Mount Kinabalu, while timber installations and warm lighting add depth and tactile warmth to the space. Seating areas are arranged to encourage moments of pause, allowing guests to move through the hotel at an unhurried pace.

The curved detailing follows the exact geometry of the Cara logo, subtly integrating the hotel’s branding into the interior

The spatial experience unfolds gradually, with transitions between public and private areas designed to maintain a sense of quiet continuity. Soft curves, sculpted partitions and layered lighting guide movement through the interior while reinforcing the hotel’s calm atmosphere. Rather than dramatic architectural gestures, the design relies on subtle spatial sequencing and tactile materials to create a sense of balance and stillness.

A circular lounge area centred on a curved sofa recalls the communal setting of gathering around a campfire by the shore

Joinery profiles mirror the curvature of the Cara logo, subtly embedding the brand into the interior language

Guest rooms continue the landscape-driven narrative, with each room type drawing inspiration from a different element of Sabah’s natural environment. Sculpted walls, curated lighting compositions and a restrained material palette create distinct yet cohesive atmospheres that evoke the stillness of forests, the openness of coastal horizons and the warmth of sunset skies.

Inspired by Mount Kinabalu, a textured wall behind the bed recalls the mountain’s rugged granite cliffs, while soft lighting and muted tones temper the surface and add depth

Through this adaptive reuse, The Cara Hotel transforms a former commercial building into a refined hospitality environment rooted in place. By translating the landscapes of Sabah into subtle spatial gestures and material expressions, the design creates a sanctuary where guests can slow down, reconnect and experience a quieter expression of luxury.
