Buwit House

Renovated Balinese compound with new living pavilion overlooking pool

The property is set on a landscape of three tiers that step down from the East to the Western edge of the site, looking over paddy fields and to Mount Batukaru in the distance.

Overall floor plan

The house is accessed through the first and lowest tier. Past the entrance gate is a garage and store area beside an open staircase. The second tier has a small viewing deck above the garage roof and a stone water feature wall. The stairs continue up to the the third and highest tier, where three building volumes for living, working and sleeping are arranged before an infinity pool running across the horizon.

A quiet arrival court beneath planted terraces and textured stone walls

The original structure of the Living block was extended out towards the pool. The flanking walls of the extended volume express the horizontal lines of concrete shuttering. Full-width sliding doors open out the West facade, offering views over the landscape. A level change from the original to extended volume breaks up the open plan space into areas for dining, living and kitchen. The island kitchen spans across the step, binding the spaces back together.

A walkway extends north from the living block, connecting it to the study block. Originally this was divided into three small bedrooms. two of the bedrooms were merged to make a larger guest suite and the remaining was converted to the study room. Private courtyards were inserted to each room to bring natural light and ventilation.

The sleeping block runs perpendicular to the study block in a rectangular form from east to west. Internal partitions of the existing block were removed to create a large open space with a centrally positioned walk-in wardrobe that separates the bathroom from the sleeping area. The perimeter around the block was opened up allowing a garden to wrap around it.

Across the project, materials were selected to work in cadence with the existing structures, which were mostly retained. Natural teak and Benkirai wood meld with the existing timber framing of the roofs, walls and windows, while light oak veneer contrasts and highlights key joinery elements. Expressed board-formed concrete applied to selected walls reflect the horizontal tiers of the site
