ASTEEL V-DEK for Longhouse at Kampung Melikin, Balai Ringin

A community-built longhouse shaped by tradition, cooperation, and local craftsmanship

The longhouse, comprising approximately 30 'bilik' (family units), was built through the collective effort of the village community in Kampung Melikin, Balai Ringin. Construction was carried out through shared labour, reflecting the strong spirit of cooperation and togetherness that remains central to the Dayak people way of life. Instead of relying on external contractors, the villagers organized and constructed the project themselves using locally available skills and knowledge passed down through generations. V-DEK was applied to the upgrading of the roof structure of the long house.

Contemporary materials by ASTEEL supports a longhouse that continues to foster communal living

V-DEK is a premium pre-finished metal roofing and walling profile manufactured by ASTEEL. It features bold trapezoidal ribs for enhanced strength, complemented by subtle fluting that delivers a clean, modern appearance. Although modern materials such as V-DEK were introduced, the longhouse still retains the familiar layout and communal living concept traditionally found in Dayak longhouses. Shared spaces continue to play an important role in bringing the community together, while each 'bilik' functions as a private family space within the larger collective structure.

By using V-Dek, it prioritize durability, easy installation, and tropical climate resilience

While traditional longhouses were mostly built using timber and thatch, this project upgrades to V-DEK metal roofing and lightweight steel truss systems supplied by ASTEEL Group Berhad. The use of these materials reflects the community’s practical consideration towards ease of installation, lower maintenance, and long-term reliability. ASTEEL roofs are inherently fire-resistant and termite-proof, making them an excellent choice for safety and peace of mind. Concurrently, they deliver the structural strength required to withstand Borneo’s harsh tropical climate.

The fusion of tradition and innovation ensures the longhouse remains resilient and enduring

Rather than replacing tradition, the integration of modern steel systems represents an adaptation of vernacular architecture to present-day needs. The project demonstrates how traditional forms of living can continue to evolve while preserving cultural identity, ensuring the longhouse remains relevant and resilient for future generations.
